As Britain remembers those that died in the terror atrocities of the July 7th 2005 attacks in London, the sinister shadow of another attack looms above. We are all too aware that threats and attacks are being committed elsewhere around the world: Boko Haram bombings in Nigeria, Al-Shabab attacks in Kenya, Isil in Syria and Iraq. The British authorities are ever ready for another possible attack

As the commemorations to mark the anniversary of the bombings in London continue today, in the face of unspeakable evil in our world, we pray for those who are mourning the dead and those who are survivors – those suffering physical injuries and psychological traumas and ask for God’s blessings on them. But the issue that remains is how, as Christians, do we react and respond to evil. What hope can we find that we enable us to move forward in the future?

Various responses to terror have been advocated from legislative measures to full blown military strikes on terror cells and terror States. In the letter to the Ephesians, St Paul writes: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11)

And so as Christians we stand together in love with those who mourn. We stand together with those who campaign for justice and peace. We stand together with the brave responders who helped survivors ten years ago though the trauma of the attacks. We stand together in defiance of the perpetrators of evil. We stand together with other faiths as we work together for the future supporting one another. When we stand together we are witnessing to the love and peace of Christ who stood for all victims giving his life for all.

We stand therefore with the readiness of the gospel of love, peace and hope. Let us put on the whole armour of God: faith, prayer and the word of God, so that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the evil one and having done all, to stand firm.
