In a few weeks the Great Administrator will file away 2013 in the file cabinet labelled past years and so it shall be goodbye 2013 and hello 2014.

It is said one should leave the past behind and forge ahead to the future. If only it was that simple. The reality is that it can be argued that a lot of what the future has in store is simply an extension of past events.

A news anchor commented on sky news recently that the infamous Plebgate saga was a 49 second incident that has lasted over 490 days with no end in sight. It is not beyond the realms of plausibility to say that both Andrew Mitchell and the Metropolitan Police will spend 2014 trying to rein in the run-away Plebgate train from 2012.

Spare a thought for the wildly reviled one hit wonder, sentenced to a life of ridicule for the crime of not being able to recreate past success that most humans would kill for. Just maybe, the life-long fat royalties from that one hit would sate the hurt of not being able to get another big hit.

A very good question would be how can one move on to the bright bold future (orange if you please) if one has not been able to come to terms with one’s past failures or successes and what they mean for one’s life journey? The answer is that one surely can not do so.

So the $64,000 question is how can one get closure on the past and forge into the great future? How indeed?

I shall end with three more quotes and a question:

“Study the past if you would define the future.” – Confucius

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.” – Rick Warren

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – Apostle Paul

What past event do you need to get a handle on, and how would you go about it?
